Navigating a New World: Canada's Global Future

Part memoir and part manifesto, this is Lloyd Axworthy's account of his years as Canada's foreign affairs minister in the late 1990s and his vision for Canada's role in the world. Axworthy championed "human security," the idea that international policy should protect individual people rather than just states, and it led to some of the era's landmark achievements: the Ottawa Treaty banning anti-personnel landmines, efforts against the use of child soldiers, and the creation of the International Criminal Court. He takes readers inside those diplomatic battles and many others, then sets out how Canada can keep an independent foreign policy alongside the United States and help build a safer, fairer and more sustainable world. 450 pages, with bibliography and index.
